Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, is an aggressive brain tumor that forms in the base of the brain. DIPG begins in the brainstem, in an area called the pons. The pons controls vital life functions including balance, breathing, bladder control, heart rate, and blood pressure.

Glial cells in the brain hold nerve cells in place, bring food and oxygen to nerve cells, and help protect nerve cells from disease, such as infection. In brain stem glioma, the glial cells in the brain stem are affected. The brain stem is made up of the midbrain, pons, and medulla. Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) are highly-aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain tumors found at the base of the brain. They are glial tumors, meaning they arise from the brain's glial tissue — tissue made up of cells that help support and protect the brain's neurons.

Pons glioma

Three types of glial cells can produce tumors. Glioma is a common type of tumor originating in the brain. About 33 percent of all brain tumors are gliomas, which originate in the glial cells that surround and support neurons in the brain, including astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and ependymal cells. The symptoms of a diffuse midline glioma (previously called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) can vary, as the areas where they usually develop are responsible for a range of different body functions.

Patients with diffuse pontine gliomas commonly present with multiple cranial nerve palsies, long tract signs, and ataxia. 70,71 Typically, these tumors can cause the pons to expand by more than 50% and can infiltrate into the medulla or midbrain.

Brain stem gliomas are more common in children than in adults. The term brain stem glioma is a generic description that refers to any tumor of glial origin arising in the brain stem, inclusive of the midbrain, pons, and medulla. While other histologies (e.g., ganglioglioma) can occur in the brain stem, the following two histologies predominate: Gliom är en tumör som liknar gliaceller i centrala nervsystemet, och kan vara godartad (benign) eller elakartad (malign).

The brain stem is the lowest part of the brain, that connects with the spinal cord. It controls body functions that we don’t usually think about such as breathing.
